This Dell PowerEdge R740xd is a 14th-generation 2U rack server chassis with a dense 12x3.5-inch front drive layout and an additional 2x2.5-inch rear bay section. The bay configuration supports SAS/SATA storage when paired with the appropriate Dell LFF and SFF drive carriers, backplanes, internal cabling, and RAID/PERC or HBA controller, with the rear 2.5-inch positions adding SFF drive capacity without occupying the front 3.5-inch bays.

Final configuration depends on the installed processors, memory population, PCIe risers, network adapters, power supplies, cooling hardware, rails, firmware, and operating-system support. Storage planning should account for the 3.5-inch front and 2.5-inch rear bay sizes, SAS/SATA interface support, controller and backplane type, and the Dell-supported hardware options for the R740xd chassis.
