Refurbished Dell Components Buyer’s Guide
What does “used” or “refurbished” components mean?
“Refurbished” is a broad term that vendors use differently. For some, it just means used or previously-owned. At STI, it means that we guarantee your equipment works as good as new–or better. We rigorously test all Dell parts and components before they leave our doors, and all our Dell components are pulled from working systems. We have a large inventory of used Dell processors, memory, hard drives and sleds, network adapters, video cards, bezels, cables, and more.
If you have an older generation server or storage array, you may not be able to find new components when something breaks or needs an upgrade. Dell typically only stocks the latest one or two generations of each model–which is why finding a reliable refurbished Dell partner is crucial to the success of your business.
How to find the Dell components you need
Replacing broken components
If part of your IT infrastructure breaks down, you need a quick solution that can get you back online quickly. Finding the right parts can be daunting–but we’ve broken the process down into simple steps to ensure you can get compatible parts that meet your needs.
- Identify your Dell system: Look at the service tag or express service code, the unique seven-digit alphanumeric identifier usually located on a sticker or pull-out luggage tag. You can also find the system model number on the service tag sticker or in your system settings.
- Determine whether you need official Dell parts or third-party components: Benefits of buying official Dell parts include guaranteed compatibility, warranty, and access to Dell technical support–but they also cost more. Third-party vendors offer a wider range of options and price points, and many offer warranties and technical support that are just as robust as Dell’s.
- Find the parts you need through the channel you selected: If you’re buying through Dell, visit the Dell support website. Search for your specific system model and browse the “Parts & Accessories” section. If you’re buying through a third party, make sure to review their return policies in case of incompatibility. Regardless of channel, look for an exact replacement of your failed part or a compatible upgrade.
- Install your new components: Dell offers manuals and tutorials for installation on their support website. If you’re buying through a third party, they may offer installation instructions or support. STI offers certified repair services and we’d be happy to assist you with your component installation. If you’re local to the Kansas City area, you can drop your system off at our Overland Park office and we can handle the installation for you.
Upgrading components
If nothing’s broken, but you’re looking to increase your memory or upgrade your Dell system in another way, you may have more flexibility in selecting the best parts and components. Check Dell’s recommendations for compatible upgrades, or talk to one of our Dell-certified technicians for advice.
Typically, if you use a Dell system, you’ll need to find Dell parts for upgrades. However, there are certain components such as memory or RAM that offer broader compatibility with non-Dell equipment.
No matter what you need, we can find it for you
How to select a used Dell parts vendor
When determining whether to partner with a refurbished Dell supplier, consider the following factors:
- Warranty: What kind of warranty do they offer? Do they offer Dell-certified warranties?
- Testing: How many times are Dell components tested before they are re-sold? At STI, we pull components exclusively from working systems, and test them multiple times to ensure high performance. We can provide health reports upon request.
- Installation support: Will your supplier send you clear instructions on installation? Will they perform the installation services themselves?
- Lead time: If you need a part urgently, how quickly can your supplier get it to you? Do they offer expedited shipping or same-day delivery?
- End of support timeline: Does your vendor have a time limit on how long they’ll continue supporting older systems? At STI, we have no end of support timeline. We support our customers’ systems for life, and make recommendations for upgrades and refreshes along the way.
