The Dell PowerEdge R740 is a very versatile, two-socket 2U rack server with impressive scalability. The business architecture can scale up to three 300W or six 150W GPUs, or up to four FPGAs. With up to 16 2.5" drives or 8 3.5" drives the R740 provides the perfect platform for VDI deployments with 3 double-width GPUs, supporting up to 50% more users when compared to R730. With scalable Intel® Xeon® delivering a 27% increase in processing cores and 50% increase in bandwidth over previous generation of Xeon processors.

The R740 has the processing cycles and threads and large memory footprint necessary to deliver larger and higher-performing virtual machines for data centers and cloud platforms. This system allows two Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors and up to 28 cores per processor with 24 DDR4 DIMM slots allowing 3TB max, Supporting RDIMM /LRDIMM with speeds up to 2666MT/s.

  • The option for up to three 300W dual-width accelerators/GPUs or six 150W GPUs (choose from Intel® Arria, Xeon Phiâ„¢, NVIDIA® Tesla® and AMD FireProâ„¢) supports environments that require processing acceleration, including graphics-intensive virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) implementations, such as CAD/CAM and other research and development applications.
  • Eight PCIe Gen3 expansion slots plus a dedicated slot for a RAID controller further enhance IO flexibility to help make the R740 an ideal compute node for IT as a service (XaaS) providers as well as high-performance computing (HPC) and medical-imaging solutions.
  • Built-in Security designed as part of a cyber resilient architecture, integrating security into the full server lifecycle. Leveraging new security features built-into the R740 server strengthening protection, reliability and securely delivering accurate data to your customers.
  • The popular-sized 2S/2U R740 can be easily configured as a reliable, general-purpose server for business-critical applications, with scale-out storage, automated management and high-availability features, such as:
